Commissioning of Lighting Control Systems

Configured, Tested and Ready to Perform

The physical installation is only part of the process for setting up a new lighting control system. To ensure it performs as intended and is efficient, reliable and in line with the design specification and code requirements, it needs to be properly commissioned. At ALD Lighting Solutions, we provide a professional commissioning service for commercial lighting control systems, working on site to configure, test and verify every element of the installation before handover.

Our team has extensive experience in commissioning a wide range of wired and wireless lighting control systems, including those from Casambi, Helvar, Tridonic and Sylvair, as well as our own ALCOM-PRO system. We work closely with M&E engineers, electrical contractors and project managers to ensure the commissioning process is carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption to the building and its occupants.

The Process of Commissioning a Lighting Control System

Commissioning a lighting control system is a structured process that typically includes the following stages:

  • Pre-commissioning checks: Before any configuration work begins, we carry out a thorough review of the installed system against the original design specification. This includes checking that all luminaires, drivers, sensors, control devices and wiring have been installed correctly and in the right locations.
  • System configuration and programming: Once the installation has been verified, we ensure the control system is configured to meet with the agreed design intent. This includes checking the programming zones, dimming levels, scheduling systems, occupancy sensor responses and daylight harvesting settings, as well as any integration with building management systems (BMS) where required.
  • Functional testing: Every element of the system is tested to ensure it is operating correctly. This includes checking that all controls, sensors and luminaires respond as intended and that energy-saving functions and emergency lighting systems are working properly. The system must meet all the performance requirements set out in the project specification.
  • Verification and sign-off: Once all testing is complete and any issues have been resolved, we produce a commissioning completion certificate in line with CIBSE Commissioning Code L, confirming that the system has been commissioned to the required standard. This documentation is an important part of demonstrating compliance with UK Building Regulations Part L.
  • Client handover and training: We take time to walk through the completed system with the relevant building managers or facilities teams, ensuring they understand how to use and manage the system effectively going forward. We also provide clear documentation covering all aspects of the lighting control commissioning process.

Who We Work With

Our commissioning service is used by a wide range of clients and project teams, including M&E engineers, electrical contractors, main contractors, design and build teams and facilities managers. We are experienced in working within live commercial environments and understand the importance of planning commissioning activity carefully to minimise disruption to ongoing operations.

Lighting Control Commissioning in Action

A good example of our commissioning expertise in practice is our work at Nyetimber Vineyard in Pulborough, West Sussex.

Working alongside RX Architects on the redevelopment of a historic medieval barn, ALD supplied and commissioned a Helvar DALI lighting control system, enabling grouping and scene setting for the space which is used for receptions and wine tasting events.

The system was configured to allow flexible control of lighting zones, giving the client intuitive and easy management of the atmosphere throughout the venue.

Frequently Asked Questions

A poorly commissioned lighting control system can fail to deliver the energy savings, performance and user experience it was designed to provide. In some cases, it can also create compliance issues. Professional commissioning ensures that the system works as intended from day one, reduces the risk of costly call-backs and gives building owners and facilities managers confidence that their investment is protected. Our commissioning process is fully aligned with CIBSE Commissioning Code L, which represents standards of good practice for lighting installations across the building services industry.

The time required to commission a lighting control system depends on the size and complexity of the installation. A straightforward single-zone system in a small commercial space may take only a few hours, whereas a large multi-zone installation across several floors could require several days on site. We will always provide a clear commissioning programme at the outset of the project so that the relevant contractors and building managers can plan accordingly.
